A Treasure Hunter’s Dream: the Shepton Mallet Giant Flea Market
Posted April 21, 2025If you’ve got a soft spot for the curious, the vintage, the handmade, or the slightly bonkers, then the Shepton Mallet Flea Market is a must-visit gem in the heart of Somerset. We made our way there this Easter (2025) for a morning mooch—and let’s just say, it was worth every moment.
Why Visit the Giant Shepton Mallet Flea Market?
Held at the Bath & West Showground, this beloved flea market is the largest in the West Country and absolutely bursting with character. From the moment we arrived (around 9:30am, which we’d recommend if you want easy parking and the best finds), we were swept up in the electric atmosphere of discovery. The car park was free and just a short stroll to the action—super easy and stress-free, which always gets things off to a good start!
What to Expect
The market sprawls across both indoor and outdoor spaces, with stall after stall of brilliantly eclectic goods. Inside the halls, you’ll find everything from antique furniture and original artwork to vintage jewellery, glassware, books and all sorts of beautiful oddities. We saw old tools and vintage toys, a treasure trove of nicknacks, and some incredible pottery – from hand-thrown mugs to full dinner sets that wouldn’t look out of place in a glossy interiors magazine.
Outside, the vibe is just as lively. Rustic furniture, crates of old records, taxidermy (yes, really!), vintage garden ornaments, enamel signs – you name it, it’s probably there. Some of the stands are almost little theatres of nostalgia. Even if you’re not buying, just browsing is a joy. There’s something magical about rummaging through lathes of old type trays, baskets of brass buttons, or shelves of faded 70s Tupperware.
Food, Drinks and a Lively Atmosphere
Wandering builds an appetite, and luckily there’s a fab selection of food stalls to keep you going. Whether you fancy something hot and hearty, or a coffee and cake pick-me-up, you’re well looked after. And yes – even the Bath & West Bar was open! Nothing like a cheeky cider to toast your bargain-hunting adventures.
The Vibe
It’s hard to describe exactly what makes the Shepton Mallet Flea Market so special—it’s the sheer variety, the friendly traders, the sense of unearthing a one-off gem, and that mix of history and creativity all in one place. We stayed until just after lunch, full of ideas and slightly giddy with inspiration (and maybe a little bit of cake).
At just £6 entry, it’s an affordable and fun outing, whether you’re furnishing a cottage, hunting for props, topping up your vintage wardrobe, or just enjoying a good old mooch.
Hidden Somerset Verdict
The Shepton Mallet Flea Market isn’t just for collectors—it’s for the curious, the creative, and anyone who loves a bit of Somerset eccentricity. Make a morning of it, grab a friend, and see what treasures await. Even if you go home empty-handed, you’ll have had a great time exploring this vibrant, ever-changing wonderland.
