About Avalon Marshes
Tucked between Glastonbury and the Somerset Levels, Avalon Marshes is a rich and wild landscape where nature, history and archaeology intertwine. This unique wetland is part of a nationally important nature reserve network, home to otters, marsh harriers, bitterns and seasonal starling murmurations. Visitors can follow well-marked trails through reedbeds, meadows and ancient woodlands, spotting wildlife from accessible hides and learning about the landscape’s transformation from ancient sea to rich wetland. It’s one of the best places in the UK to experience wetland wildlife up close.
At the heart of the area is the Avalon Marshes Centre, a welcoming base for exploration. Here, you’ll find information about local nature reserves, cycle routes and walking paths, as well as a charming café, small gallery, and the remarkable Avalon Archaeology site – a living reconstruction of Somerset’s Iron Age, Roman, Saxon and Viking past. Whether you’re a keen birdwatcher, a family on an outdoor adventure, or simply looking for a peaceful place to walk, Avalon Marshes is an unforgettable window into Somerset’s natural and historic soul.
