About Joby Carter

Joby Carter is one of the UK’s best-known traditional signwriters, celebrated for his vibrant, hand-painted fairground-style lettering. With a studio now based in Street, South Somerset, his bold, nostalgic style is admired far and wide – and his passion for preserving heritage crafts fits perfectly with our ethos here at Hidden Somerset.

Best known for his time running the iconic Carters Steam Fair, Joby now focuses on passing down the lost art of signwriting through his popular 5-day courses. Held at his Somerset workshop, these hands-on sessions cover everything from brushwork and layout to colour and composition – all taught in Joby’s friendly, no-nonsense style.

Alongside teaching, Joby opens his studio to the public for regular open days, giving visitors the chance to see his process up close and browse a stunning selection of work. You can also buy prints and original artwork, making it easy to take home a piece of fairground magic.

Whether you’re a creative soul, a designer craving a break from the digital world, or simply curious about traditional signwriting, a visit to Joby Carter’s studio is a brilliant way to celebrate craft, colour, and Somerset’s creative spirit.
