Thorn Wood Forge Axe-Making: A Blacksmithing Day Out in Somerset
Posted July 4, 2025Hidden deep in the ancient woodlands of the Hinton St George Estate lies Thorn Wood Forge – a place where fire, steel, and craftsmanship come together in the most magical way. We were lucky enough to be invited behind the scenes to photograph one of their blacksmithing courses, and what we found was something truly special. From the rhythmic clang of hammers to the smell of woodsmoke in the air, it’s an unforgettable Somerset experience.
The Forge is an art form that has stood the test of time, woven into the very fabric of Somerset’s heritage.
There are few places where time seems to slow, where the clang of hammer on steel feels almost meditative – but Thorn Wood Forge, nestled in a quiet clearing on the Hinton St George estate in South Somerset, is one of them.
We were recently invited by blacksmith to capture a course in action, and what a treat it was. Surrounded by ancient woodland and birdsong, Thorn Wood Forge is more than just a workshop – it’s an immersive experience in traditional craftsmanship. It’s a place where metal, fire and sheer human effort combine to create something beautifully functional. Axes, tools, knives – each piece forged here carries with it a sense of story, of time, and of care.
The Craft of forging
As we arrived, the forge was already glowing with warmth. The students – most of them first-timers – were donning leather aprons, their faces lit with equal parts excitement and nerves. The Team, calm and considered, began guiding them through the rhythm of the process. Heating, shaping, quenching, refining – it’s hard work, yes, but deeply satisfying.

Watching a piece of raw steel become a hand-forged axe in the space of a few hours is nothing short of magical. Even more remarkable was the atmosphere – supportive, curious, and quietly awe-filled. It’s no wonder these courses book up fast.
For anyone looking for a truly hands-on experience in Somerset, this is it. Whether you’re a bushcraft lover, history buff, or simply someone looking for a unique day out in nature, Thorn Wood Forge offers something that few places do: a connection to making, to the land, and to a slower, more mindful way of working.
Capturing the Process
After the course, we wandered the estate grounds – wildflower meadows, ancient trees, and gentle footpaths that make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The Hinton St George Estate is a hidden gem in itself, and the perfect setting for something so rooted in tradition. We left Thorn Wood Forge with muddy boots, the smell of woodsmoke in our hair, and a huge sense of appreciation for the people keeping these skills alive. And yes – some brilliant photos and stories to share too!
